The Forgotten Side of Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is a magical place. Crystal clear waters surround the island and an abundance of wildlife roam the land that come as close as touching distance on the islands’ hiking trails. Tourists flock to the Western end of the Island to see the out of this world Remarkable Rocks or to get caught up in a seal frenzy at Admirals Arc. Unfortunately, this part of the island has been destroyed by a hurricane of bushfires that took place early this year, ultimately affecting the entire island directly and indirectly.

While certain parts of the island are renowned as a popular tourist destination, such as Flinders Chase National Park, a large scale of Kangaroo Island is often forgotten. I am writing this to draw attention to the beauty of the other side of the Island.

My go to accomodation, Penneshaw Beach Stay, is just a two minute walk from the Sealink terminal to enter and leave the Island. Not only is this place known for its unique and outstanding hospitality but also its convenience and location. Just a minutes walk down to Penneshaw beach, quirky cafes, food spots and your everyday shopping needs; the location holds for optimal fishing spots where you can catch fresh seafood whilst swimming in crystal clear waters in tranquility.

Below are four beautiful locations I photographed, all within 15 minutes of the ferry terminal, where you can both relax and explore. This little Island is dependent on the tourism it generates, so get yourself to the Island as soon as you can!

Located only a 10 minute minute drive from Penneshaw this island town is brilliant for fishing, star gazing and swimming in crystal clear waters. Because this location is often protected from harsh winds, it makes a perfect place for recreational water activities.

This is where the Sealink ferry will dock and from here you can explore quirky cafes, swinging bridges, fishing spots and native animal infested hiking trails. Penneshaw is often used as just a stop over but it is a lot more than that. The Baudin Conservation walk is an amazing hike that leads you to amazing Cliff edges and rivers.

3. Pennington Bay

Fifteen minutes from the Sealink Ferry Pennington Bay is known for it’s surfing, fishing, photography and swimming. Grab a coffee from the local coffee cart and explore the rock pools. It is also possible to see bioluminescence here at night!

4. Baudin Conservation Park

An easy hike that leads to secluded beaches, rivers and streams. This location is full of wildlife from Wallabies and Kangaroos, to Dolphins and Wedge Tail Eagles. IF you are adventurous follow the animal tracks to beautiful views of the coves and sea.

Kangaroo Island is a beautiful untouched part of South Australia, there is so much to do here and I highly recommend everyone visit it when they can. I will be running night photography workshops from these locations in the near future. You will learn three years worth of experience in just one night.
